Taking advantage of an error, the Padres scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Giants, 3-1. Charlie Williams, a last-minute starter for the Giants when Randy Moffitt came down with an appendicitis attack, yielded only one hit until the seventh inning when Willie McCovey led off with a single. The Giants brought in Steve Barber, who yielded a single by Johnny Grubb. Rod Gaspar, running for McCovey, stopped at second. After a sacrifice by Derrel Thomas, Elias Sosa became the Giants' third pitcher of the inning and walked Fred Kendall intentionally to load the bases.

Horace Clarke grounded to Tito Fuentes, who threw home, but Dave Rader dropped the ball, allowing Gaspar to score. Lowell Palmer forced Grubb at the plate. Bobby Tolan then singled, driving in Kendall and Rich Morales, who ran for Clarke. Palmer gained his first victory with the Padres since being purchased from Syracuse (International) May 31.
