Nolan Ryan yielded a single by Alex Johnson with two out in the first inning as the only hit off his deliveries while pitching the Angels to a 5-0 victory over the Rangers. Coach Whitey Herzog directed the Angels after the club had fired Bobby Winkles as manager earlier in the day. Dick Williams, named to succeed Winkles, was due to take over the reins on July 1. After giving up the hit to Johnson, Ryan did not permit another baserunner until the speedballer issued his only pass of the game to Toby Harrah in the sixth inning. [The Sporting News]
