The Red Sox worked two double steals, one of them resulting in a theft of home, while scoring four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Orioles, 9-6. Paul Blair homered in the first for the Orioles and Danny Cater rapped one for the Red Sox in the fifth in a seesaw game that saw the Orioles tie the score at 5-5 in the eighth when Elrod Hendricks hit a pinch-triple and Boog Powell lofted a sacrifice fly.

Juan Beniquez and Carl Yastrzemski drew walks for the Red Sox in the ninth and worked a double steal, putting them in position to score on a single by Dwight Evans. Bob Montgomery singled, sending Evans to third. Evans and Montgomery then pulled off the second double steal of the stanza, Evans scoring. Doug Griffin followed with a single to drive in Montgomery.
