Jim Rooker survived a shaky start and was able to pitch the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Expos with batting support from Richie Zisk, who rapped three run-scoring singles. Rooker was tagged for two runs on his first five pitches when Ron Hunt singled, Tim Foli doubled and Willie Davis and Bob Bailey singled. Al Oliver, Willie Stargell and Zisk hit singles for a run in the Pirates' half of the first. Rennie Stennett doubled and Rooker singled to tie the score in the second.

John Montague, pitching in relief of Mike Torrez, was the Expos' loser on an unearned run in the fifth. Davis dropped a fly by Oliver, allowing the batter to reach second, and Zisk drove him home with a single. A double by Stargell and single by Zisk added the final tally in the seventh.
