A four-run outburst in the fifth inning was enough to carry the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Yankees, who went down to their sixth straight defeat. Fernando Gonzalez homered for the Yankees in the second before the Tigers began their attack on Pat Dobson with a single by Bill Freehan in the fifth.

Jerry Moses bunted and when Dobson threw late to second, both runners were safe. Mickey Stanley doubled, driving in Freehan and chasing Dobson. Gary Sutherland greeted arrival of Cecil Upshaw with another double, scoring Moses and Stanley. Jim Northrup later accounted for the fourth run with a sacrifice fly on which Sutherland scored.
