Pinch-hitter Pat Bourque supplied the decisive single, driving in two runs in the eighth inning, to enable the Athletics to defeat the Angels, 7-5. Before Bourque's clutch hit, Angel Mangual stood out at bat for the A's, knocking in four runs with a double and homer. The Angels held a 3-2 lead until Mangual rapped his round-tripper with two men on base to put the A's ahead in the sixth.

Then in the eighth, Joe Rudi beat out a bunt, Gene Tenace walked and, with two out, Bourque batted for Ted Kubiak and singled to drive in Herb Washington, running for Rudi, and Tenace.
