Tom Seaver, who had missed two starts because of a pinched nerve in his left hip, allowed only three hits in 7 1/3 innings before the trouble flared up again, but the Mets' ace was able to receive credit for a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. Seaver gave up an unearned run in the first when Larry Bowa was safe on an error by Wayne Garrett, stole second and scored on a single by Willie Montanez. Dick Ruthven, who started for the Phillies, allowed only three hits in seven innings, but they included a homer by Cleon Jones following a walk to Rusty Staub in the first. The Mets added an unearned run in the third. After Garrett was safe on an error by Dave Cash, Felix Millan singled, Staub walked and Jones batted Garrett home with an infield out. John Milner drove in the Mets' final run with a single in the eighth. Jack Aker, who replaced Seaver, yielded a run in the ninth on singles by Bowa and Del Unser and a pair of infield outs.
