Homers by Cito Gaston and Willie McCovey helped the Padres defeat the Giants, 5-1, to pull out of the N.L.'s West Division cellar for the first time since June 24, 1972. The Giants, who suffered their 10th loss in the last 11 games, dropped into the basement.

Gaston homered in the first inning and singled ahead of McCovey's circuit clout in the third. Gaston accounted for his second RBI with a run-scoring single in the ninth. The Giants' only run came on a walk to Bobby Bonds, single by Chris Speier and throwing error by Enzo Hernandez in the eighth before Larry Hardy came in to finish the game for Randy Jones.
