Staked to a five-run lead in the first inning, Steve Carlton ended his personal three-game losing streak and pitched the Phillies to an 8-1 victory over the Padres. In the Phils' opening outburst, Mike Schmidt and Willie Montanez walked and Del Unser tripled for the first two runs. After Tommy Hutton walked, Bob Boone added three runs with his first homer since June 5. The Phillies wrapped up their scoring in the eighth.
