The Reds tied an N. L. record when six different players hit homers in an 8-5 victory over the Cubs. Joe Morgan started the slugging in the first inning, Tony Perez and Cesar Geronimo connected for the circuit in the second, Dan Driessen and Johnny Bench rapped round-trippers in the third and George Foster completed the bombardment with a three-run drive in the sixth. There had been eight previous occasions in the N. L. with one club having homers by six different players in a nine-inning game. The major league mark is seven by the Orioles on May 17, 1967. The Cubs had homers by Rick Monday and Jose Cardenal and the two-team total of eight was one short of the major league record. [The Sporting News] |
