Steve Garvey and Bill Russell hit homers as the Dodgers scored eight runs in the first five innings to defeat the Phillies, 8-4. Garvey got the Dodgers rolling with his circuit clout in the first inning. The Phillies came back with a run on doubles by Larry Bowa and Mike Schmidt in their half, but the Dodgers went ahead to stay with a tally in the second on a double by Von Joshua and single by Russell. Russell hit his homer with a man on base in the fifth when the Dodgers capped their scoring with three runs.

Al Downing, who started for the Dodgers, gave up a homer by Ollie Brown in the seventh before being lifted with two out in favor of Mike Marshall, who made his 18th appearance in the Dodgers' last 22 games. Marshall yielded five hits and two runs in the last 2 1/3 innings. [The Sporting News]
