Graig Nettles hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career, climaxing a six-run outburst in the first inning, and Dave Pagan gained his first major league victory as the Yankees defeated the Royals, 8-2. Two walks and a single by Roy White loaded the bases, and the Yankees' first two runs scored on a pass to Otto Velez and single by Thurman Munson before Nettles came to the plate and hit his homer off Paul Splittorff.
