Luis Tiant pitched a four-hitter and Cecil Cooper scored both of the Red Sox runs in a 2-1 victory over the Rangers. A single by Cesar Tovar, safe bunt by Dave Nelson on which Tim Blackwell threw wildly and sacrifice fly by Jeff Burroughs produced an unearned run off Tiant in the first inning. The Red Sox tied the score in their half when Cooper and Carl Yastrzemski walked and Dwight Evans singled. The winning run followed in the third on a double by Cooper and triple by Yastrzemski to beat Jim Bibby, who allowed six hits.
