| With a double by Bobby Murcer as the key hit, the Yankees scored twice in the first inning and rode behind the pitching of Doc Medich to a 2-1 victory over the Royals. With one out in the first, Elliott Maddox doubled off Nelson Briles and crossed the plate on Murcer's two-bagger. Murcer took an extra base when Hal McRae fumbled the ball in right field and scored on a groundout by Ron Blomberg.
