Mike Cuellar pitched no-hit ball for 6 1/3 innings before wilting in the 95-degree heat, but the Orioles' veteran lefthander gained a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. Wilbur Wood, who started for the White Sox, did not allow a hit for the first five frames before the Orioles scored in the sixth on a single by Bobby Grich, a passed ball and single by Don Baylor. An infield single by Boog Powell, error by Dick Allen and sacrifice fly by Mark Belanger added what proved to be the deciding run in the seventh.

The White Sox picked up their tally in the home half of the seventh and could have tied the score except for a base-running blunder by Ken Henderson. Bill Melton reached second base when Baylor dropped his fly ball in left field. Henderson singled, moving Melton to third, but Henderson was caught in a rundown between first and second and was tagged out.
