. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Making his first start of the season, Tom Hall gained his first victory when the Reds defeated the Pirates, 9-4, behind the batting of Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, who drove in seven runs between them. Hall pitched 5 1/3 innings before giving way to Pedro Borbon. Bench socked a three-run homer off Jerry Reuss in the first, and the Reds added a run on a single by Perez in the third.

The Pirates, after coming back with two in their half of the third on a double by Richie Hebner and three singles, tied the score in the fourth with two walks and a triple by Mario Mendoza. The Reds broke the tie and went ahead to stay with two runs in the fifth on a single by Pete Rose, pass to Joe Morgan, single by Bench and sacrifice fly by Perez. Bench doubled for his third hit of the game in the seventh and scored on a single by Perez, who also wound up with three hits. [The Sporting News]
