A homer by Bill Melton after a single by Carlos May in the first inning carried the White Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Orioles. The White Sox added their other run in the seventh on singles by Bill Sharp and Bucky Dent, intentional pass to Lee Richard and sacrifice fly by May.

Stan Bahnsen, a winner for the first time since June 23, was lifted in the eighth after hitting Al Bumbry with a pitch and walking Rich Coggins. Rich Gossage, in relief, passed Boog Powell to load the bases and allowed a run to score on a forceout by Bobby Grich before retiring the side to save the game. [The Sporting News]
