The Cubs managed four runs in the ninth on only one hit, Andre Thornton's two-run single, in a come-from-behind 7-3 triumph over the Braves. Knuckleballer Joe Niekro struck out Chicago leadoff batter Carmen Fanzone to open the ninth, but Fanzone reached first when the ball eluded catcher Johnny Oates. Don Kessinger popped out, but three straight walks, the final one by reliever Danny Frisella, forced home the tie-breaking run. Thornton followed with his two-run single, a walk loaded the bases again and the final run crossed the plate when Frisella fielded winner Oscar Zamora's sacrifice bunt, but threw to third too late for a forceout.

The Braves' Ralph Garr had tied the score in the seventh with a solo homer. The Cubs pecked out single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames for a 3-0 lead. Atlanta cut it to 3-2 in the sixth on Dusty Baker's two-run homer. [The Sporting News]
