Losers in nine of their last 10 games, the Cardinals were shut out by Clay Kirby, 3-0, as the Reds' righthander scattered nine hits and got home run help from Joe Morgan. Cincinnati got the only run necessary off loser Alan Foster in the second when Dave Concepcion drew a two-out walk and rode home on Ken Griffey's double.

Morgan led off the eighth with his 12th homer and the Reds tacked on their final run in the ninth against reliever Mike Garman, Cesar Geronimo getting the RBI with a two-out single. The defeat dropped St. Louis, which has been able to score only two runs in the last 35 innings, below .500 for the first time this season. [The Sporting News]
