Winless since June 14, the Pirates' Dock Ellis threw a steady eight-hitter at the Astros and ended Houston's six-game winning streak, 3-1. Ellis hurled scoreless ball after the first, when the Astros counted their only run on Greg Gross' single, a groundout and double by Bob Watson. Pittsburgh went ahead, 2-1, in the fourth on singles by Al Oliver, Richie Zisk, Manny Sanguillen, Richie Hebner and Frank Taveras. Taveras bunted safely in the seventh, was sacrificed to second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored the final run when second baseman Tommy Helms booted a grounder by Gene Clines.
