Held hitless for eight innings by rookie Wayne Garland, the A's rallied with five runs on only four safeties in the ninth to turn back the Orioles, 6-4. Dick Green broke Garland's spell with a leadoff single and Oakland loaded the bases on an error by Enos Cabell and single by Bert Campaneris. Sal Bando singled past third for two runs.

Reliever Grant Jackson then gave up a run-scoring double to Reggie Jackson which also sent pinch-runner Herb Washington to third. An intentional walk to Joe Rudi loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Tim Hosley followed with a sacrifice fly which broke the 4-4 tie, and Jackson scored the fifth run of the frame on Bob Reynolds' wild pitch. The A's had scored one run in the second without benefit of a hit, and the Orioles took the lead with two in the bottom of that inning then padded it to 4-1 with two more in the fourth.
