Striking out Toby Harrah and Duke Sims with the bases loaded and one away in the ninth inning, Luis Tiant preserved his 14th victory as the Red Sox defeated the Rangers, 3-1. The Red Sox scored their initial run in the fifth on singles by Rick Burleson and Tim Blackwell around a stolen base. Tiant retired the first 12 batters before giving up the Rangers' run in their half of the fifth on a double by Mike Hargrove and single by Jim Spencer.

The Rangers committed three errors in the sixth when the Red Sox broke away. Dwight Evans beat out an infield hit to Lenny Randle and advanced to second on the third baseman's wild throw. Carl Yastrzemski singled, scoring Evans, and took second when center fielder Joe Lovitto overran the ball.
