Jack Billingham was able to beat the Cubs for the fourth straight time this season, although knocked out in the sixth inning of the Reds' 4-1 victory. The Cubs' run scored in the fourth on a walk to Bill Madlock and singles by Billy Grabarkewitz and Steve Swisher. The Reds came back with three in their half after loading the bases on walks to Joe Morgan and Dave Concepcion around a single by Johnny Bench. George Foster singled, driving in two runs, and Bill Plummer added a tally with a sacrifice fly.

Billingham was lifted after putting two men on base with none out in the sixth. Pedro Borbon cooled the Cubs on two hits the rest of the way. The Reds added an insurance run in the seventh on a walk to Foster, a wild pitch and double by Plummer. [The Sporting News]
