The Royals, after scoring four runs on successive homers by Amos Otis and John Mayberry in the fifth inning, picked up another tally in the ninth and defeated the Yankees, 5-4. In the fifth Fred Patek walked, Jim Wohlford singled and Otis homered for the Royals' first three runs before Mayberry followed with a solo swat.

Fran Healy singled in ninth. Al Cowens was retired and George Brett forced Healy, but Patek doubled and Wohlford singled to score Brett. That run, which put the Royals ahead, 5-2, became all-important when the Yankees rallied for two runs in their half of the ninth on a single by Sandy Alomar with the bases loaded.
