After a first inning that saw scoring on wildness vs. power, the Twins pulled away to defeat the Tigers, 7-5. In the first, the Twins scored three runs with the aid of three wild pitches by Lerrin LaGrow, but in the Tigers' half Vic Albury faced only three batters and was kayoed when Mickey Stanley homered, Gary Sutherland walked and Al Kaline singled. Dave Goltz relieved and on his first pitch Bill Freehan homered to put the Tigers ahead, 4-3.

The Twins came back to take the lead with two runs in the fifth on a pass to Glenn Borgmann, single by Rod Carew and double by Larry Hisle. Craig Kusick doubled in the seventh, moved up on a sacrifice and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Borgmann. Carew plated an insurance marker with a single in the eighth before the Tigers counted once in their half on doubles by Freehan and Jim Northrup. [The Sporting News]
