Taking advantage of a two-out error by Horace Clarke, the Mets scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Padres, 4-2. Jon Matlack helped himself with a single to lead off the stanza and Bud Harrelson walked. After Wayne Garrett struck out and Cleon Jones flied out, Clarke booted a grounder by Rusty Staub, allowing Matlack to score. Ed Kranepool followed with a single, driving in Harrelson. After an intentional pass to John Milner, Jerry Grote singled two runs across the plate to provide what proved to be the Mets' winning margin. Cito Gaston homered for one of the Padres' five hits off Matlack.
