| Taking advantage of a two-out error by Horace Clarke, the Mets scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Padres, 4-2. Jon Matlack helped himself with a single to lead off the stanza and Bud Harrelson walked. After Wayne Garrett struck out and Cleon Jones flied out, Clarke booted a grounder by Rusty Staub, allowing Matlack to score. Ed Kranepool followed with a single, driving in Harrelson. After an intentional pass to John Milner, Jerry Grote singled two runs across the plate to provide what proved to be the Mets' winning margin.
