The K. C. crew took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Vada Pinson, double by Cookie Rojas and homer by Amos Otis. Jim Mason singled with the sacks filled to produce two runs for the Yankees in the second.

The Royals made it 4-2 with a run in the seventh on singles by Fran Healy and Rojas around a sacrifice. In the Yankees' half, Lou Piniella singled, Chris Chambliss was safe on an error by Rojas and Thurman Munson walked. Mason grounded out, scoring Piniella.
