As a one-man wrecking crew, Reggie Smith batted in all of the Cardinals' runs with a triple and two homers to beat the Phillies, 4-3. Smith tripled after a pass to Bake McBride in the first inning, but the Phillies tied the score in the second with a triple by Del Unser and a passed ball.

Smith sent the Cards ahead again with a solo swat in the sixth, only to have the Phillies come back with a pair in the seventh on a single by Dave Cash with the bases loaded. However in the eighth, Ted Sizemore walked and Smith provided the Cardinals' deciding blow with his second homer of the game. [The Sporting News]
