Juan Marichal, coming off the disabled list for his first appearance since May 15, pitched six innings in relief and gained the victory when the Red Sox defeated the Orioles, 7-5. Rick Wise, who started for the Red Sox, left the mound with a sore shoulder after walking Bobby Grich with none out in the fourth inning. Marichal, relieving, got off to a shaky start, giving up a single by Boog Powell, pass to Don Baylor and three-run double by Earl Williams before settling down to hold the Orioles hitless the rest of the way.

The Red Sox, who were losing, 5-4, tied the score in the fifth on a double by Carl Yastrzemski, a wild pitch and sacrifice by Dwight Evans. Yastrzemski then singled in the seventh, Rico Petrocelli walked and Evans tripled to break the tie and enable Marichal to come out a winner. [The Sporting News]
