Making his first major league start, Dave Lemanczyk allowed only four hits before giving way to John Hiller in the eighth inning as the Tigers defeated the Brewers, 4-1. Lemanczyk yielded a single by Don Money in the eighth before being lifted. After Hiller relieved, Money advanced as Tim Johnson was retired and scored on a single by George Scott.

The Tigers counted twice in the fifth on a triple by Ed Brinkman, single by Gene Lamont, forceout by Ron LeFlore, a stolen base and single by Gary Sutherland.
