A single by Richie Hebner in the 14th inning scored Ed Kirkpatrick and gave the Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. The Cards counted their runs in the fourth when Ted Simmons singled and Joe Torre homered. The Pirates came back with the tying pair in their half.

Al Oliver produced the first run with a homer. Willie Stargell and Dave Parker followed with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. Stargell was retired in a rundown on a grounder by Bob Roberston.
