Nelson Briles, with relief help from Steve Mingori, who retired the last two batters, received credit for his 100th major league victory when the Royals defeated the Rangers, 4-0. Briles won 97 games with the Cardinals and Pirates before being acquired by the Royals in a deal last December.

Fergie Jenkins, who had a string of four victories for the Rangers, made a wild pickoff throw to allow the Royals to score an unearned run in the second inning. The Royals clung to that slim lead until the eighth when they broke the game apart with three runs. George Brett and Fran Healy singled and Fred Patek walked to load the bases.
