Playing before an Oldtimers Day crowd of 50,828, largest turnout in the A. L. so far this season, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 6-2. The Yankees loaded the bases in the second inning on a single by Bill Sudakis, an error and a walk and scored three runs on a double by Sandy Alomar. An infield hit by Elliott Maddox, a sacrifice and double by Sudakis added a run in the third and the Yankees' final pair counted in the eighth on a single by Alomar and homer by Jim Mason.
