Bill Madlock collected four hits and had a hand in three of the Cubs' runs in a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. In the fourth inning, two walks and a single by Jerry Morales loaded the bases and set the stage for a two-run single by Madlock. Richie Hebner, who had four hits for the Pirates, tripled and counted on a single by Dave Parker in the home half of the fourth. The Cubs made it 3-1 in the seventh when Madlock singled, moved up on a walk and scored on a single by Steve Swisher.

Billy Williams doubled in the eighth and gave way on the paths to Jim Tyrone, who registered what proved to be the winning run on an infield hit by Andre Thornton and sacrifice fly by Morales. A double by Manny Sanguillen, infield out and sacrifice fly by Rennie Stennett gave the Pirates one run back in their half of the seventh before they fell short with their final marker in the ninth on a double by Art Howe, an error and single by Hebner.
