Scoring five runs in the first inning on homers by Willie Crawford and Von Joshua, the Dodgers defeated the Astros, 5-1, behind the four-hit hurling of Andy Messersmith, who posted his seventh straight victory. Bill Buckner singled ahead of Crawford's circuit clout. Steve Garvey then singled, Ron Cey walked and Joshua, filling in for Jim Wynn, who was given the day off, hit his first homer of the season. Messersmith lost his bid for a shutout in the eighth when the Astros scored their run on a walk to Milt May and singles by Bob Watson and Cliff Johnson.
