Rallying for two runs in the ninth inning, the Cardinals gained a 4-3 victory to break a tie with the Phillies for first place in the East Division. The Phillies struck for two quick runs in the first inning on a single by Larry Bowa, triple by Mike Schmidt and bad throw home by Joe Torre after fielding a grounder by Willie Montanez. Singles by Jay Johnstone, Bob Boone and Tommy Hutton made it 3-0 in the fourth. The Cardinals picked up one run in their half of the fourth on a single by Ted Sizemore, forceout by Bake McBride, single by Ted Simmons and double by Torre. McBride singled in the eighth and scored on an infield out and single by Jose Cruz.

Jerry DaVanon walked in the ninth, moved up on a sacrifice and counted the tying run when Lou Brock singled. Brock then stole second, reached third on a groundout and scored the winning run on a single by McBride. Brock had two stolen bases in the game, bringing his career total to 702 and moving the Cardinal speedster past Honus Wagner into fourth place on the major leagues' all-time list.
