A brilliant pitching performance by Al Fitzmorris, who allowed only one hit in the first eight innings, went for naught when the Twins tied the score at 2-2 in the ninth and then defeated the Royals in the 14th inning, 3-2. Bobby Darwin homered for the Twins in the second, but after that Fitzmorris retired 20 straight batters before Danny Thompson singled in the ninth for the Twins' second hit. Jerry Terrell ran for Thompson and advanced to third on a sacrifice and infield out before scoring on a double by pinch-hitter Harmon Killebrew.

In the 14th, Marty Pattin was on the mound as the Royals' fourth pitcher of the game when Rod Carew singled. With one out, Larry Hisle also singled, sending Carew to third. The Royals then called on Joe Hoerner in relief, but Tony Oliva hit a sacrifice fly to score Carew. [The Sporting News]
