Celebrating his 25th birthday, Ted Simmons smashed a grand-slam homer in the sixth inning to power the Cardinals to a 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. A walk to Steve Yeager and triple by Von Joshua gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the third before their troubles started in the sixth when Joshua dropped a fly by Alan Foster for a two-base error. Lou Brock beat out an infield hit, Foster holding second. Ted Sizemore, trying to sacrifice, forced Foster at third. Joe Torre then walked to load the bases for Simmons' slam on Geoff Zahn's first pitch to him. [The Sporting News]
