Luis Melendez led off with a double, went to third on a bloop single by Ken Reitz and scored on a double by Mike Tyson. Then with two out, Ted Sizemore kept the inning going with a single, scoring Reitz, and Smith followed with his circuit clout. Nate Colbert produced the Padres' run with a homer in the eighth.
