The relief pitching of John Hiller, who allowed only one hit in the last 4 2/3 innings, enabled the Tigers to defeat the Athletics, 4-3. The Tigers scored twice in the first on singles by Ron LeFlore, Al Kaline and Ben Oglivie, together with a stolen base by LeFlore and error by Glenn Abbott. Dick Sharon made it 4-0 with a two-run homer in the second. The A's came back with a two-run homer by Gene Tenace in the fourth and added another run on a single by Bert Campaneris in the fifth before Hiller took over to gain the victory in relief of Lerrin LaGrow.
