Richie Hebner walked, hit two doubles and scored three times and Al Oliver batted in two runs to lead the Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers, who suffered their fifth straight defeat. Tom Paciorek singled and Steve Yeager doubled for a Dodger run in the seventh, but a double by Hebner, wild pitch and infield out by Oliver tied the score in the fourth. The Dodgers went ahead again with two runs in the sixth. A double by Steve Garvey and single by Ron Cey produced the first run. After successive forceouts by Joe Ferguson and Paciorek, a single by Yeager and safe squeeze bunt by Andy Messersmith made it 3-1.

The Pirates came back with an equalizing pair in their half of the sixth on walks to Hebner and Willie Stargell, single by Richie Zisk and double by Manny Sanguillen. Then in the eighth, Hebner hit his second double and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Oliver. Dave Giusti saved the game for Jerry Reuss, relieving with two men on base and one out in the ninth and inducing Bill Buckner to ground into a double play. [The Sporting News]
