Bidding for his 19th victory, Wood was knocked out in the fourth inning and drew his 14th defeat when the Yankees beat the White Sox, 9-4. Thurman Munson hit two doubles, drove in three runs and scored one before Elliott Maddox forced Wood's exit with a homer in the fourth. The Yankees added a run off Skip Pitlock in the sixth and put the game away against Rich Gossage by scoring three more times in the seventh.

Rudy May, who started for the Yankees, was forced to leave the mound after pulling his hamstring on the pitch that Bill Melton hit for a homer in the fourth inning.
