Led by Bob Robertson, who hit a homer and two doubles and drove in four runs, the Pirates handed the slumping Dodgers their sixth straight defeat, 10-3. The Pirates scored a run in the first inning on a double by Rennie Stennett and single by Manny Sanguillen and added two in the third on singles by Stennett, Sanguillen and Willie Stargell, together with an error by Geoff Zahn, before breaking the game wide open in the fifth.

Al Oliver and Richie Zisk singled and Robertson drove them home with a double. After an intentional pass to Richie Hebner, Frank Taveras singled to the load bases. Greg Shanahan then became the Dodgers' third pitcher, following Zahn and Charlie Hough, and walked Larry Demery and Stennett to force in two runs. Robertson homered with Zisk on base in the sixth. Zisk accounted for the Pirates' final run with a round-tripper in the eighth. Demery, who pitched for the Pirates, gave up an unearned run in the fifth and yielded a two-run homer by Willie Crawford in the eighth before Dave Giusti came in to hurl the final frame.
