Although knocked out in the eighth inning, Luis Tiant gained his 19th victory of the season when the Red Sox defeated the Twins, 9-6. The Red Sox built up an 8-0 lead for Tiant before the Twins exploded for six runs in their uprising. Larry Hisle accounted for three runs with a homer and Bobby Darwin drove in two with a single before Diego Segui put a stop to the rally. The Red Sox hit seven doubles during the game, including three by Rick Burleson, two by Dick McAuliffe and one each by Carl Yastrzemski and Tim Blackwell. [The Sporting News]
