An intentional pass to Tony Perez backfired on the Mets in the seventh inning when Dave Concepcion followed with a three-run homer to carry the Reds to a 6-5 victory. The Mets built up a 3-0 lead before the Reds began their comeback with two runs in the third on a pair of walks and singles by Perez and Concepcion. Joe Morgan singled in the fifth, stole second and scored the tying run on a single by Perez.

Pete Rose doubled in the seventh and, after two out, the Mets decided to walk Perez, only to have Jon Matlack serve up a gopher pitch to Concepcion. The Mets rallied for two runs in the ninth on a pass to Rusty Staub and homer by Cleon Jones, but Dick Baney came in to get Don Hahn on a pop fly and Will McEnaney took over as the Reds' sixth pitcher of the game to retire the last two batters.
