Nolan Ryan fanned 19 batters and set a major league record for most strikeouts in three consecutive games with a total of 44, but the Angels' righthander nevertheless lost to the Tigers, 1-0, in 11 innings. With two out, Ben Oglivie singled, stole second and scored on a single by Bill Freehan. Ryan, who whiffed every Tiger batter except Gene Lamont, had at least one strikeout in every inning and fanned the side in the sixth, eighth and ninth.
