Johnny Bench batted in four runs with a single and homer to lead the Reds' attack in a 10-7 victory over the Expos, who also had a four-RBI batter in Barry Foote. A double by Joe Morgan and single by Bench started the Reds' scoring in the first inning. However, the Expos came back to take a 3-1 lead with the aid of a homer by Willie Davis before the Reds exploded for six runs in the fifth, three counting on Bench's homer.

The Reds capped their scoring with three runs in the sixth. Pete Rose was awarded first on catcher's interference by Foote. Morgan and Tony Perez singled to score Rose. When the ball got away from Ken Singleton in right field, Morgan also crossed the plate. Dan Driessen then added a run with a single. Foote hit his homer with two men on base in the Expos' half of the sixth and drove in another run with a single in the seventh, but Clay Carroll protected his victory by pitching scoreless ball in the last two stanzas.
