With help from Steve Mingori, Steve Busby gained his 19th victory of the season when the Royals won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-4, but the Brewers came back to take the nightcap, 1-0, in 13 innings. The Royals knocked out Bill Champion with a four-run barrage in the second inning of the lidlifter on a combination of singles by Tony Solaita, George Brett and Buck Martinez and doubles by Cookie Rojas and Vada Pinson. Solaita then provided the blow that decided the game, hitting a homer after a single by Orlando Cepeda in the third. Busby was chased when the Brewers rallied for three runs in the seventh, but Mingori allowed only one hit in the last 2 2/3 innings.

The Brewers won the nightcap when George Scott singled off Lindy McDaniel in the 13th and Johnny Briggs followed with a triple. [The Sporting News]
