Luis Tiant became the first 20-game winner in the major leagues this season, pitching the Red Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Athletics. The shutout was the sixth for the crafty Cuban righthander. A crowd of 35,866 saw Tommy Harper lead off the first inning with a homer off Vida Blue. The Red Sox added two runs in the sixth on singles by Juan Beniquez, Dwight Evans and Carl Yastrzemski and sacrifice fly by Jim Rice. [The Sporting News]
