Although allowing baserunners in every inning except one, Jerry Reuss came out a winner when the Pirates defeated the Padres, 6-2. The Pirates scored in the first on a single by Al Oliver and double by Willie Stargell, added a tally on singles by Manny Sanguillen and Frank Taveras, together with two infield outs, in the second and got a third run on a homer by Rennie Stennett in the fifth.

The Padres broke through with a marker off Reuss on a singles by Gene Locklear, Fred Kendall and Enzo Hernandez in the seventh, but the Pirates pulled away with three runs in the last two stanzas. Reuss was lifted with a man on base and one out in the ninth and Dave Giusti gave up a run on a single by Glenn Beckert before retiring the side. [The Sporting News]
